COURSE DETAILS

The course looks at what is meant by abstract, expressive painting, compared to representational painting, and guides participants about how to successfully approach, plan and create more abstract work.

The course considers:

  • what we mean by the terms ‘abstract’, ‘expressive’ and ‘realistic’

  • where to start, and how?

  • the elements of abstract painting – composition, form, tonal balance, technique, approach, and colour

  • how to work acrylic paint in all its textural glory – experimenting with washes and glazes to thick, oil-like pastes.

Participants will:

  • review and discuss a range of contemporary and traditional landscape painting to think about what appeals and impacts them

  • undertake short and longer, guided and free exercises and experiments in charcoal, collage, pencil, pastels and acrylic paint to have fun and free up their practice

  • produce informed abstract work of a high quality that sits in the liminal space between real and purely abstract.

The rich colours and the beautiful light of southern Spain in May will provide a superb natural palette for self-expression and emotion through art. Working in acrylic paint and gels enables students to create finished work quickly, bringing a vitality to their work.

The course is suitable for everyone, including complete beginners.

ABOUT THE TUTOR

Claire Chandler is a London based abstract painter who explores the connection between nature and a sense of place. She spent much of her childhood living abroad, which later developed into a love of travel and experiencing new places.

Her paintings begin with charcoal drawings made on location, in response to the landscape. Elements from these drawings are then pared back, simplified and worked into with layers of colour emerging as abstract paintings made with energy and emotion.

Rather than creating a visual reproduction of a place, she uses energetic brushstrokes and a colour palette that evokes the calm and tranquility, recalling a memory of the location and her personal response to being there.

Claire studied in Newcastle, graduating in 1997 with a degree Fine Art. Since then she has worked in the arts alongside her creative practice. She has been an art tutor at Sutton College for 10 years and also runs her own private art classes from her home studio and within the local community. Claire is passionate about sharing her love of drawing and painting with others.

In 2023 Claire was awarded an artist residency in the New Forest National Park and created a series of paintings in response to the landscape. These works have recently been exhibited, and many sold at The Other Art Fair in London.

Claire is represented by private and online galleries and her paintings have been selected for exhibitions in London, Paris and New York and feature in private collections around the world.

All classes will be held in the large studios in the hotel, and there will be plenty of opportunity to get out and explore the glorious surrounding countryside.
