COURSE DETAILS

Spain has a long and rich mosaic heritage dating back to Roman times and running up to the organic architectural legacy of Antoni Gaudí. Indeed, many Roman architectural sites have been discovered in Andalucia, including some beautifully preserved mosaic floors. The museum in our course venue contains an almost complete, and beautifully detailed Roman mosaic floor recovered from a villa nearby. The tradition of mosaics has been embedded in Spanish art since then, and this course looks at more contemporary and organic design and style suitable for beginners and improvers.

This course is designed to be an introduction to Trencadís, or Pique Assiette, techniques of cutting and shaping discarded ceramics to make the pieces with which to create mosaic works of art. Students will work on a minimum of two pieces: a small, personal piece that will not be too heavy to take away at the end of the course and a bespoke element for a mosaic mural, enhancing a wall in the host village of Moclín.

The emphasis on this course is to use mosaic and the techniques of mosaic to create lasting and beautiful works of art and giving you the confidence to make your own mosaics when home.

ABOUT THE TUTOR

Starting out as a hobbyist in 2001, then part-time whilst running a B&B, Katy Galbraith switched to full-time mosaic making in 2018 on moving to the countryside near Comrie, Perthshire. Her mosaics can be purely decorative, such as a picture for a garden wall or a sculptural piece, or with a more practical purpose such as a tabletop or bathroom splashback.  Her work can be seen in the National Museum of Scotland, in various community spaces and in galleries in Perthshire.

She has taught mosaic locally to various groups and been a guest tutor with Grampus Heritage in Cyprus.  She has also participated in various mosaic projects and symposiums in Germany, Italy, and Tunisia.

In producing her mosaics, she aims to be true to herself and her interest in recycling and sustainability by incorporating many recycled materials, including those representing her local area or pieces donated for use by friends and family, like a traditional patchwork concept. This reuse of materials also gives her work a textural quality to it, as light bounces off the different tile facets.

The receipt of recycled materials stimulates her creative processes, often acting as a catalyst for new work.  She sees working with mosaics as an evolving process, as she explores working with new materials, themes, and people.
